Electrical projects to discuss with an electrician
Electrical repairs, outlets and lighting
Describe a faulty outlet, flickering light or affected room without opening electrical equipment. For ceiling fans, new lighting or additional outlets, list the locations and fixtures. Ask the electrician to separate troubleshooting, new wiring and any wall repairs in the estimate.
Panel upgrades and new circuits
Explain the equipment you want to add and its model details, such as an EV charger or generator. Have an electrician assess the existing service and circuit needs. Ask which panel, wiring, permit and inspection costs are included before comparing prices.
Rewiring and generator electrical work
For house rewiring or generator connections, ask the electrician to define the circuits involved, proposed equipment and any transfer equipment needed. Clarify access, temporary power interruptions, testing and who restores opened walls or ceilings.
Comparing electrical-work estimates
Describe what you want to power, repair or install. Avoid opening electrical equipment to gather information for a project request.
Existing conditions
Explain the symptoms, affected rooms and equipment involved. Ask whether the estimate assumes existing wiring and panel capacity are suitable.
Installation details
For new outlets, lighting or an EV charger, compare equipment, circuit work, cable routing and whether wall or ceiling repairs are included.
Completion and approvals
Ask who handles any required permits and inspections, how the work will be tested and what shutdowns or access are needed.
Use our free worksheet to compare up to three quotes, record exclusions and print your questions.
Planning an EV charger installation at home
Before buying a charger, describe your vehicle, daily driving needs, parking location and how long you can charge overnight. An electrician can assess your home's electrical capacity and recommend an installation suited to those needs.
Will I need a panel upgrade?
That depends on the home's existing electrical load and the proposed charging equipment. Ask for a capacity assessment and an explanation of any recommended upgrade. Ask whether a suitable load-management option could work with the existing service.
What should the installation estimate include?
Compare the charger model, new circuit, cable route, mounting and any trenching or wall repairs. Ask the electrician to identify permit and inspection responsibilities, equipment supplied by you, and work excluded from the price.
What information can I gather safely?
Provide vehicle and charger model details, photos of the parking location and approximate distance to the panel. Leave the panel cover in place. Have the electrician assess wiring, circuits and capacity rather than inspecting them yourself.
Read the U.S. Department of Energy's home EV charging guide and the EPA's charging and electrical-capacity guidance for more planning information.
The panel cost tool covers panel work only; it is not an EV charger installation quote.
Example: how to describe your project
This is an illustrative planning example, not a customer review or a completed Connect-A-Pro job. Adapt it to your home and leave out details you do not know.
I would like an EV charger installed in my garage. I have the vehicle and charger model details, but I do not know whether the existing electrical service can support it. Please assess the required circuit and cable route, and identify any panel work or wall repairs separately in the estimate.
Include your project ZIP and preferred timing when submitting a request. Share contact details through the form rather than including them in project photos.
Local project coverage and availability
Our Volusia and Flagler launch area includes Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, Port Orange, DeLand and Palm Coast, plus other communities listed on our service-area page. Eligibility is checked by the property's exact ZIP and the type of work.
Homeowner requests are not open yet. We are collecting homeowner interest by service and ZIP, and this guide is available to help you plan. A request does not guarantee a response, estimate or start date.
Who sets the project price?
The contractor provides the estimate and agrees on the work with you. Connect-A-Pro's cost tools are planning aids, not binding quotes. Discuss scope, exclusions, payment terms and scheduling directly with the contractor.
How can I compare costs and find an affordable option?
Ask each contractor to price the same work, including preparation, materials, access, disposal and any extra charges. An hourly rate, square-foot price and fixed project quote cover different things unless the assumptions match. Use the estimate-comparison worksheet to record the full price and questions before you choose.
How do I evaluate a local contractor?
Review relevant experience, recent references, insurance and any license required for your specific work. Confirm who will perform the work and get the scope and payment terms in writing. A directory listing or a claim to be the cheapest or best does not replace those checks.
Use our local contractor hiring checklist for official license searches, insurance questions and building-department links for Volusia and Flagler.
Before you request a contractor
You do not need to identify the electrical fault yourself.
A panel photo can help for upgrade and EV-charger projects.
Smoke, active sparking, burning odor, or exposed energized wiring should be treated as an immediate safety issue.
