Interior house painting
An interior painter needs to know which walls, ceilings, doors and trim are included. List surface repairs, color changes and furniture that needs moving. Ask whether the house painting estimate includes primer, protection of floors and the proposed number of coats.
Exterior painting
Tell an exterior painter which surfaces need attention, such as stucco, siding, fascia, trim or exterior doors. Separate painting from damaged-wood repairs. Ask what washing, scraping, caulking and surface preparation the painting contractor includes, and how weather affects scheduling.
Cabinet painting and refinishing
A cabinet painter needs the number of kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors and drawer fronts, the existing finish and the look you want. Painting for an opaque color and refinishing to retain a wood appearance can involve different work. Ask about cleaning, surface preparation, finish products, on-site versus off-site work, hardware, curing time and whether cabinet interiors are included.
Garage floor coatings and roof coatings
For garage floor epoxy or concrete coatings, describe the existing surface, previous coatings and visible cracks. Ask how preparation and moisture concerns affect the proposed system. Roof painting or coating is a separate scope from roof repair or replacement; ask which specialist should assess the roof first.

How do I evaluate a local contractor?
Review relevant experience, recent references, insurance and any license required for your specific work. Confirm who will perform the work and get the scope and payment terms in writing. A directory listing or a claim to be the cheapest or best does not replace those checks.
